Born and Raised on a Submarine

Cut off from the outside world, Strum Fleet spent his entire life under water. Everything he knows was learned via telegraph. This is his story, told with popular songs that he has never heard. A tale of dreams, fears, failure, and the difference between being wrong and being different.

Conceived, written, and performed by Thompson Powers (Pricks: the Vaccine Musical, A Thompson Family Variety Show Must Go On, KidsFringe’s The PreTend Friend Show).

Thompson Powers is a Denver-based comedian, puppeteer, and jack-of-all trades who has created iconic shows and characters for local institutions Meow Wolf, Casa Bonita, Denver Zoo, and Rise Comedy. Previous Denver Fringe shows include Pricks: The Vaccine Musical, his one-clown special A Thompson Family Variety Show Must Go On, and KidFringe’s PreTend Friend Puppet Show. He can be seen teaching, directing, and performing around town with Makeshift Shakespeare, Hit and Run Musical Improv, PreTend Frends, and Lucky Powers.

Thompson’s PreTend Friend Show provided six seasons of original live productions to introduce kids of all ages to the art of storytelling, audience etiquette, and live theater. He has brought dinosaurs to life for Jurassic World: The Exhibition, crafted acts for area variety shows, and starred as the title puppet in Travis Heermann’s horror film “Demon For Hire.”

This show has a wildly unique gimmick of "blind" ukulele covers that give songs new meaning. When Strum performs a popular anthem, the timing is skewed and the melody is unrecognizable, yet he performs them with the earnest conviction of a man who believes he’s discovered holy scripture. It forces the audience to ask a fascinating question: When is a song no longer a song?
