Gollum Girl LIVE

An true tale of growing up weird in the age of juggernaut film trilogies and what happens if you make a freaky little guy the cornerstone of your personality, Gollum Girl LIVE is a comedic and confessional solo show exploring writer/performer A Yourd’s lifelong passion for The Lord of the Rings, specifically her preteen obsession with the character Gollum. Join Gollum Girl on a journey from Middle Earth to early-2000s middle school lunchrooms to this very theatre as she attempts to uncover why we love the things we love even if no one seems to agree with us.

This show has a particular appeal to audiences who have been involved with media fandom and fans of the fantasy genre. If you are attending with young fans, please be aware that the show does acknowledge the existence of sex, periods, and slash fanfiction (or a preteen millennial’s understanding of these topics).

A Yourd (she/they) is a playwright, director, dramaturg, and solo performer based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. They hold an MFA in Dramatic Writing from the University of New Mexico and a BFA in Drama from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, where they studied devised theatre at Playwrights Horizons Theater School. While living in New York, Yourd co-founded Undiscovered Countries, a Brooklyn-based incubator for new work, and studied with The TEAM, Theater Mitu, and the New York Neo-Futurists. Their full-length plays include a body horror insect apocalypse (Mick the Mapmaker), a prom queen Frankenstein revenge fantasy (Jane Kim Stein: The Modern Prom Thesis), a starship road/drug trip starring Talking Heads-obsessed aliens (Remain in Light; or, a love letter to the greatest music in the galaxy), and a disastrous queer romance set in the multiverse of fanfiction (Slash & The Space Cadet). Yourd’s work has been presented by North Fourth Art Center, Duke City Repertory Theatre, and Blackout Theatre in Albuquerque, New Mexico, by Theater Viscera in Portland, Oregon, and by Undiscovered Countries in Brooklyn, New York. Gollum Girl LIVE has been developed with the support of Undiscovered Countries, Blackout Theatre, and Katie Farmin. Special thanks to Eric Gould (Mr. Gollum Girl).

The show I saw was a delightful confession and celebration of nerdy fixation and self-discovery beginning in those formative tween and teen years. It's a reminiscence of the events that can start to carve our path into adulthood. I enjoyed it completely, and even if Lord of the Rings isn't your thing, the storytelling and humor is enough to warrant seeing Gollum Girl Live!
